Joseph R. Bruman Soviet Spacecraft Collection, 1968-1983.

The collection includes 98 color and black and white eight by ten-inch, eight and a half by eleven-inch and eleven by seventeen-inch paper-based positive graphic images on various Soviet spacecraft programs. There are also journal articles on Soviet spacecraft programs and images of spacecraft displays at the Kosmos Pavilion, Moscow, USSR. Some of these photographic images are marked property of JPL, from slides made by M.E. Davies during the early and mid 1970s. Also, there are photos of the Russian research ship Chumikan as it headed for a rendezvous with a returning space vehicle. Photographs of the Chumikan were taken by a Soviet Hormone helicopter during the recovery operation. The Australian Directorate of Public Relations, Canberra issued these images with the approval of the Australian Department of Defence. The collection also includes transcripts from Soviet Cosmonaut press conferences and photographic images of USSR Spacecraft Venus 4, 5 and 7 with Soviet Lunokod 1 lunar roving vehicle. Additionally, there are photographic images of some space design diagrams and some color photocopied images that are captioned. Overall, the photographic images show procedures and equipment employed in the execution of approach, rendezvous, docking, separation and re-entry maneuvers of Soviet spacecraft. Also, there are some photographic images of experts at the Soviet flight control center. Most of these images are generally in pristine condition. The collection is arranged as found in its original three ring binder. The items were removed from the binder and placed in folders.

Joseph R. Bruman served as an intelligence officer in the US Air Force; he retired as a Colonel. He was later employed at JPL and worked closely with William Pickering. By the time of Pickering's retirement, in May 1976 Bruman worked in Section 201, Planning. He worked there until late in his JPL career when he moved to other sections in Flight Projects, specifically Section 331, Communications Systems Research. By February 1985 he had left JPL. James E.
